Whenever you make a melee attack and there are at least two opponents in your target zone, you can split your Effort between two opponents. You decide after you see your result (and after applying all Boosts, Invocations, and adjustments). Divide the Effort as evenly as possible into two numbers. Assign each Effort to a different opponent. They each Defend separately. If you hit, your full Weapon value adds to the damage (you don't split the Weapon value).

Example: You're wielding a sword (Weapon:2) and rolled an Epic (+7) melee attack against two goblins. You would split that into Great (+4) and Good (+3). You assign the Great (+4) Effort to the bigger goblin and the Good (+3) to the smaller one. The bigger goblin rolls Fair (+2) to Defend and the smaller goblin rolls Great (+4). You hit the bigger goblin with two shifts and add your sword's Weapon value of 2, for a total damage of 4 (which may be adjusted downward by the goblin's armor). You miss the smaller goblin because its Defense Effort was higher than your Effort.
